| CCS began on 9 February
1954 when a group of professionals interested in safety formed
an association with the idea of publishing a specialized magazine
“Protección y Seguridad”.
For several months, they made contacts with businesses and
individuals interested in collaborating with the project and
the publication and organization of the magazine. The first
issue appeared in 1 May that year.
The magazine was received with enthusiasm, and its creators
decided to set up an formal accident-prevention organization
under the name CONALPRA as a private non-profit association,
with technical and scientific purposes and no political affiliation,
for the protection of industry and workers in general in Colombia.
CONALPRA quickly established itself, providing safety advice
to its members in the following key areas:
Accident prevention.
Fire prevention.
Correction of risks, conservation and maintenance.
Education / propaganda.
Occupational medical and health services.
In 1957 the association changed its name in order to project
an image closer to its objectives, to Consejo Colombiano de
Seguridad Industrial. The intention was also to reach a wider
public and to plant the word “safety” forcefully
in people´s minds with its campaigns. Finally, in 1970,
the CCS registered itself with its present
name as a non-profit association.
CCS efforts to promote safety in industry
in general had started back in 1957, with training programs,
industry committees and meetings with safety managers in the
major centers. In that year, the first Industrial Safety Congress
was organized, and in 1958 the first National Safety Convention,
in which the Ministry of Labor and representative organizations
from the rest of Latin America took part.
Today, CCS has over 500 individual and corporate
members. It is the leading organization in Colombia in the promotion
of training, dissemination and advisory services in the area of industrial
safety and health, and protection of the environment.
